  7. This program works with Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or 3.1. 
  8.  
  9. It requires the Windows File Manager and a mouse (or some other 
  10. pointing device).
  11.  
  12. File Zapper working in conjunction with the Microsoft File Manager
  13. becomes an icon that files or directories can be dragged to and 
  14. dropped on and deleted.  Files are selected by holding the left
  15. mouse button down over a file and while holding it down moving 
  16. the mouse pointer over the File Zapper icon them releasing the
  17. left button.  Multiple selections can be made and dragged to the
  18. File Zapper icon.  For contiguous groups of files the first is
  19. selected by clicking the left button over the first and then
  20. while holding the shift key clicking the left button over the
  21. last file.

  23. When File Zapper is restored to normal size it displays the number
  24. of files and directories deleted as well as four menu selections.  
  25.  
  26. File Zapper has several options to work with:
  27.  
  28.  - File overwrite, this option completely overwrites the file with data
  29.    and so eliminates any trace of the original data prior to deleting it.   
  30.  
  31.  - File backup copy, this option copies the file to the File Zapper home
  32.    directory before deleting it from the original directory.  If this
  33.    option is selected and the file overwrite option is also selected then
  34.    the file is copied and the original is overwritten.  The file is not
  35.    copied to the same name but to a name that begins with the letters 
  36.    "tr" and ends with "$$$" with numbers making up the middle of the name.
  37.    The reason for that is to keep any file name conflicts from occuring.
  38.    Use the Audit trail option and file to keep track of what file was
  39.    copied to what file.

  41.  - Delete Confirmation, this option makes File Zapper confirm the delete
  42.    of all files, in response to the request, the operator can stop the 
  43.    delete or continue the delete or with a group of files, cancel the 
  44.    collective delete.

  46.  - Delete directories, this option selects whether or not File Zapper 
  47.    will delete directories it encounters.  Directories must be empty in
  48.    order for File Zapper to delete them.  But it is fairly easy to 
  49.    empty them with File Zapper by selecting the entire directory 
  50.    and moving them to over the File Zapper Icon.

  52.  - Audit trail, this option causes File Zapper to keep a record of all 
  53.    its actions in a file that can be reviewed later.  The file it keeps
  54.    the records in is named FILEZAP.TXT.  This option should be selected
  55.    if the Backup copy option is selected.

  57.  These options are checked or unchecked from the Options dialog box which
  58.  is selected by clicking on the Options menu entry from the Non-Iconized
  59.  File Zapper menu.  They are automatically saved to disk so that you do 
  60.  not have to recheck them each time the program is run.

  62.  File Zapper has several actions that it can do from the Options dialog 
  63.  box:

  65.  - It can set itself up as an automatically starting program initialized 
  66.    when Windows is started.
  67.  
  68.  - It can remove itself from that automatic startup list.
  69.  
  70.  - It can delete all the backup copies of the files that were deleted.

  72.  - It can display this help file with the notepad text editor that is
  73.    supplied with Windows.

  79. 2. Windows 3.0 File Manager operates in a different manner then the
  80.    File Manager in version 3.1 and due to its method of operating it is
  81.    recommended that the Delete confirmation option be checked all the
  82.    time while running with version 3.0.

  84. 3. This program is written with the best efforts and intentions toward doing
  85.    exactly what it is supposed to do but no guarantees are made that it
  86.    will not do something that you do not want it to do.  It is very easy 
  87.    to delete files with this program and it is suggested that care be given
  88.    in its use.  The author will take no responsibility for the deletion of
  89.    files that the user did not want to delete.
